Egos and politics delaying HI election: Negre

New Delhi, March 13 (IANS) International Hockey Federation (FIH) chief Leandro Negre said "egos" and "political issues" are proving to be the stumbling blocks in Hockey India election.

Negre said the May 31st deadline for the election will not be extended. He advised various factions of the state bodies to bury their differences for the interest of Indian hockey.

Pathan’s century in vain as Royals lose to Mumbai Indians (Lead)

Mumbai, March 13 (IANS) Yusuf Pathan scored a hurricane 37-ball century but could not save Rajasthan Royals from suffering a heart-wrenching four-run defeat against Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Brabourne Stadium here Saturday.

Chasing a tough target of 213, Rajasthan Royals made 208 for seven in 20 overs after Pathan smashed the quickest century in IPL and the second fastest in Twenty20. Pathan was also adjudged the Man of the Match.

31 in fray in Pennagaram bypoll

Chennai, March 13 (IANS) Thirty-one candidates, 24 of them independents, are in the fray for the bypoll to the Pennagaram assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu slated for March 27.

According to the Election Commission, out of the 33 validly nominated candidates, two withdrew their candidature Saturday, the last day for doing so, leaving 31 to fight it out.

Strengthen Lok Adalats: Minister

Panchkula (Haryana), March 13 (IANS) The government Saturday said that alternate dispute redressal mechanisms like Lok Adalats should be strengthened to prevent the piling up of cases in courts.

"Strengthening our judicial system not only ensures fair, swift and affordable justice but it is also the catalyst for development. Serious efforts should be initiated to reinforce our Lok Adalats that come under alternate dispute redressal system," said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal.

Delhi judges seek action against striking lawyers

New Delhi, March 13 (IANS) The Delhi Judicial Service (DJS) Association Saturday asked the Delhi High Court intervene and take action against lawyers who went on strike earlier this week.

Lawyers of all the district courts had abstained from work March 11 protesting against corruption in the judiciary.

Badal seeks day-to-day trial of 1984 anti-Sikh riots cases

Chandigarh, March 13 (IANS) Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal Saturday sought day-to-day hearing of the over 25-year-old 1984 anti-Sikh riots cases.

Badal, who is also the president of Punjab's ruling Akali Dal, sought the intervention of the Supreme Court to order day-to-day trial of the anti-Sikh carnage to expedite the justice delivery system.

Kolkata, March 13 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Saturday said his government would work towards ensuring equal rights for the socially and economically backward sections - including Muslims - in the state.

"We can only progress if we can provide equal rights to the economically and socially backward sections of our society. We have to provide facilities so that the poor and minority communities can also come forward and get proper education," Bhattacherjee said while addressing a programme in Nadia district, more than 100 km north of Kolkata.

Australia beat Germany 2-1, win Hockey World Cup

New Delhi, March 13 (IANS) Specialist Luke Doerner fired in the winner from a penalty corner as Australia won their first Hockey World Cup in 24 years with a 2-1 victory over defending champions Germany in the final at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium here Saturday.

The Aussies, who had ended runners up to Germany in the previous two finals, proved third time lucky to lift the coveted trophy after 1986. Australia had then beaten hosts England 2-1 in the final at Willesden (London).
