The Obamas welcomed by Broadway audience in New York

New York, June 1 (ANI): U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle made their first visit to New York City on Saturday to enjoy a Broadway play, and received standing ovation from the audience before the show started. Joe Turner's Come and Gone started more than 45 minutes late, while employees flickered the lights on and off in an attempt to calm down the clapping audience. "We had no idea he was going to be here. We were really lucky to come tonight. Advani re-elected Leader of Opposition, Sushma to be his deputy in LS

New Delhi, May 31 (ANI): Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Lal Krishna Advani was unanimously re-elected as the Leader of Opposition and Sushma Swaraj as his deputy for the 15th Lok Sabha on Sunday evening. The decision was reached during a meeting of the Members of Parliament, held in the capital. BJP’s future strategy for the parliamentary session was also discussed.Advani’s re-election holds significance, especially in the wake of the veteran leaders’ initial refusal to continue as the Leader of Opposition following BJP’s poor show during recent LS elections. He had asked the Parliamentary Board to choose another leader. However, Advani was later persuaded by other senior members of the party to not take such a decision in party’s interest. Meira Kumar meets Sonia, ahead of formal declaration for LS Speaker post

New Delhi, May 31 (ANI): Union Water Resource Minister and Congress leader Meira Kumar called on Congress party President Sonia Gandhi on Sunday afternoon. The meet, which was held at 10, Janpath, Sonia Gandhi’s residence, gave strength to speculations about her getting a nomination of Congress Party for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker. Reports in Sunday newspapers widely suggested the name of Congress leader Meira Kumar, who comes from Dalit community and better known as the daughter of former Deputy Prime Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram, waiting official ‘go ahead’ of the high command in the party. Meira Kumar’s name is believed to have been cleared by the Congress core group on Saturday night. Coming out of Sonia’s residence, the 64-year-old Kumar, refused to divulge any development to mediapersons. Noted writer Kamala Das passes away

Thiruvananthapuram, May 31 (ANI): Noted Malayalam and English writer Kamala Das, also known as Kamala Suraiya, passed away in a Pune hospital on Saturday night due to pneumonia. She was 75. She was best known for her poetry and also authored some short fiction, a novel and autobiography. Born into a Nair family of literary and freedom fighters in Malabar of Kerala, Kamala gained prominence in literary circles after publication of her autobiography novel "My story" in 1976. Kamala was the daughter of V. M. Nair, a former Managing Editor of the widely-circulated Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi and mother Nalappatt Balamani Amma, a renowned Malayali female poet. No conviction for harassment, if there’s undue delay in filing complaint: SC

New Delhi, May 31 (ANI): The Apex court on Saturday ruled that a husband or family member would not be convicted of harassing the wife, if the complaint was made after passage of a considerable time after the alleged act. A Bench comprising Justices Mukundakam Sharma and B S Chauhan gave this ruling in a case related to Manju Ram Kalita, a resident of Kamrup district in Assam.
