In an interview with Wall Street Journal, Stephen Wagstaffe, the county attorney of San Mateo, CA said that the company reported to police for the theft of new iPhone that led to the search warrant and an investigation.
Gizmodo has admitted of paying $5,000 for the unit that they bought from anonymous person. According to the website, Gary Powel, a software engineer of Apple, lost an iPhone in the bar that was found by another person. However, according to California law, a person who finds an object and mindful who owns and don’t return, can be accused of theft.
Gizmodo’s parent, Gawker Media LLC, criticized the search warrant arguing that it was not valid under federal and California Journalist-protection statutes.
