Apple TV for $99 to compete Google TV: Report

Apparently the next big war in the world of technology is set to be in the TV industry. Two weeks after the announcement of Google TV, rumors are raised that Apple is in the process of updating its Apple TV. The popular blog Engadget provided the details of secret new Apple device which may declare a war between the two giants for the top position in the TV business.

Steve-Jobs_2010_ConferenceAccording to the blog, the new Apple TV will be quite small – in contrast to the current Apple TV, which is about the size of a Mac Mini – with only one power cable and a video output. Any display of streaming media will be done through wireless, the device will be able to provide picture full HD resolution (1080p).Therefore, unlike the current set-top boxes in the market, the new Apple TV will not have much internal storage – only 16GB of flash memory.

According to blog, the price for the Apple TV would be only $99, an extremely attractive price which will give a good competitive advantage over Google TV.
The blog reported that information was obtained from source close to Apple.

So Apple sees that Google is putting out a TV platform and decide to just copy them.  All Apple ever does is copy.  Apple had pretty much abandoned their Apple TV platform until Google made their announcement.  They may be the biggest tech company now, but they still act like the small dog

      @ Jake and Mike

Apple TV has been out for three years. I personally think it sucks because it does not offer enough hard drive space and it does not have contracts with any networks. But from the day it came out what Apple has said is that it will change how we watch/pay for tv.

Google may have come out two weeks before Apple about Google TV but Apple has had their product out for three years! and a simple update can make it so it can use cloud computing.

Its dumb to say that Google was first and Apple copies. Apple clearly had a vision over three years ago. Cloud computing is brand spanking new. I was at UW for Steve Balmer’s talk about cloud computing a few months ago. A year ago people did not even consider storing all their data on servers somewhere in the country.

My point is in the last year cloud computing as allowed Apple to change Apple TV.

Personally I think both Google and Apple have two great ideas. The problem is the networks and cable companies will never allow it.

I agree.  Apple is very insecure with the concept of competition.  This is what drives market innovation though, right?
