iPhone 4G update: AT&T to change data plans for new iPhone

By Jamie Cole

AT&T announced on Wednesday that company is ending the unlimited data plan and replacing it with limited data plan for its subscribers.

New plans are cheaper than the original plans  which AT&T is currently offering for its smartphone users.  One iPhone plan costing $15 will have the limit of 200MB per month where as another plan that  will cost $25 with  monthly limit of 2GB.

If customers exceed 200 MB in a monthly billing cycle, they will be given  an additional 200 MB of data usage for additional$15 for use in the cycle. Similarly $10 extra  will be charged for per 1GB  data usage after the limit.

Also AT&T  will  offer  tethering  plan for  $20  on the top of  other plans. Criticism has grown over the data cap by AT&T. As data usage continue to increase, elimination of data plan will eventually hurt the regular customer with hefty charges for exceeding the limit.

All new wireless data plans along with  tethering option  will be available from June 7.  Apple is also expected to unveil new iPhone or iPhone 4G on the same date. Recent changes are only for new customers as company is expected to get more subscribers when Apple announce next generation iPhone during the worldwide conference. However, existing customers can keep the unlimited data plan unless they switch to a cheaper tiered data plan.

This is ridiculous!! Now using apps such as pandora is no longer going to be affordable while on network plans,
because 2 hours of pandora is 2 GB of internet according to AT&T’s Data Usage Calculator! Now I’m really rethinking
an iphone! I just don’t know if it is worth it!

  2. Neat says:

Screw At&T, it’s the future, they need to get over it and upgrade their network.

  3. rosemary says:

it’s not 2 hours of pandora – it’s two hours every day for a month, that’s 2GB. so 60 hours of pandora, basically. just checked it out and if you’re using your phone for JUST pandora, you could listen to it for 65 hours and get away with the 2gb plan.

  4. alleymac says:

So, does that mean we will also have to pay for unlimited text, instead of having it all wrapped up in a $30 a month charge?

  5. DJG says:

As a former employee of att i’m used to seeing att make changes to screw the customer even more out of their hard earn money. As soon as verizon or sprint get the Iphone I will leave this greedy ass co.
Att can kiss my ass. Greedy douche bags

  6. benrey says:

instead of upgrading their network lets charge our customers more.

  7. Mike says:

Lets see how many buy the iphone now .. atleast for att.

  8. kianna says:

this data plan is absolutely outrageous. as an att costumer, i think they should just upgrade their network to get a better plan that more people would be able to go too. & be more popular-___- but instead , nope.

  9. Elisha says:

If your already a AT&T customer and you have the unlimited data plan you don’t have anything to worry about these changes are just for new customers, says at the bottom of this article. Unless I’m missing something

  10. Mark says:

I guess nobody bothered to actually do the research that says over 98 percent of att customers that have an “unlimited” data plan dont come close to the dreaded 2GB cap. So think about that before you start bitching about the posibility of saving $5 a month.

I will call tomorrow. I am furious because everything wasn’t explained to me when I paid $299 for the iPhone and over $100 for accessories! In my old plan I had 200 messages for $5.00 extra a month. The saleslady put me in the new lower plan…said I had the same coverage. Well now, two months later, I have nearly a hundred dollar charge for each month. I am a 79 year old retired teacher and am very disappointed. My son and all of his family have the unlimited plan. That’s what I need. If I didn’t have so much money invested, I would go back to Verizon, or at least I wish I would have kept the plan I had with AT&T and kept my little phone.
