70% of flights cancelled on Monday due to Volcano eruption in Iceland

The air travel chaos is continued Monday in Europe. More than 63 thousand flights have been cancelled since Wednesday because of the cloud of ash from volcano in Iceland.

According to the aviation industry, the loss per day is estimated to be U.S. $ 200 million, more than 6 million passengers were affected. European authorities are expected to meet Monday to discuss alternatives to the crisis, blamed as the worst since Sept. 11. The European Union hopes that half the traffic can return to normal on Tuesday.

The European Agency for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol) predicts that between 8 thousand to 9 thousand flights will take off in Europe today, 70% less than in a normal Monday.

The cloud of ash generated by the eruption of a volcano in Iceland make it impossible to output of about 20 thousand flights, Eurocontrol said in a statement, which, geographically, means that 50% of the European continent will be paralyzed.

There were 19 thousand flights canceled on Sunday due to the cloud of volcanic ash.
